Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

What is a QR Code?

A QR Code (Quick Response Code) is a type of barcode that people can scan using their smartphone cameras to quickly access information via URL—product information, contact details, menus, and other helpful resources for customers! Due to their convenience and versatility, QR Codes are widely used to personalize marketing campaigns, improve product packaging, promote events, and share shipping or tracking information.

How can I create a QR Code with Bitly?

Creating a QR Code with Bitly is quick and simple.

  1. Sign up for or sign into your Bitly account.
  2. Go to Create new and select QR Code from the options.
  3. Enter the Destination URL for the information you’d like to encode (and any code details if applicable, like customized domain or back-half options for the short link generated alongside your QR Code).
  4. Select Design your code and customize your QR Code style, colors, logo (or center text), frame, corners, and branding (available in some plans).
  5. Select Create your code and that’s it—you’re ready to go! You can download your code in JPEG, PNG, or SVG format or copy it directly from the Bitly platform.

Depending on your Bitly plan, you can create up to 200 Bitly QR Codes each month. And for brands needing hundreds or thousands of codes per month (or more), our custom enterprise solutions are ideal!

What types of content can I link to with a Bitly QR Code?

Bitly QR Codes can link to anything with a URL attached. This means you can create customized QR Codes that link to specific web pages, digital experiences, PDFs hosted on websites, and promotional content.

Brands can use Bitly QR Codes nearly everywhere that information is shared:

  • Product packaging
  • Order confirmations
  • SMS marketing campaigns
  • Digital posters
  • Social media
  • Billboards
  • Industry-specific media, like restaurant menus or real estate listings
Can I customize the design of my QR Code?

Yes! It’s easy to customize the look of your QR Code with Bitly’s QR Code generator. In the ‘Design your code’ step of the process outlined above, you can customize:

  • Colors and gradients
  • Dot patterns
  • Frames
  • Corners
  • Brand logos (or custom images)
  • Accompanying text

You can also save your current design to quickly create the same look again!

*Note that some of these features are only included in Bitly paid plans. With upgraded plans, you have more color, gradient, pattern, and frame options for every QR Code you create.

Do Bitly QR Codes ever expire?

Bitly QR Codes don’t expire on their own. If you want one to stop working on a schedule, set an expiration date and time during or after creation, available on paid plans. You can also redirect a QR Code to a new URL at any time or delete the link behind it to turn it off.

How many times can a QR Code be scanned?

As many times as you’d like! No matter which Bitly plan you sign up for, all Bitly QR Codes can be scanned an unlimited number of times. This accessibility makes them suitable for both large-scale and small-scale campaigns.

How can I track the performance of my Bitly QR Codes?

Bitly’s built-in dashboard gives you everything you need. View scan data for individual codes or see your top performers in the QR Code section of your paid Bitly account.

For every QR Code on a paid Bitly plan, you can track information like:

  • Total scans
  • Scan history
  • Scans by day
  • Scans by location
  • Scans by browser
  • Scans by operating system (OS)

Ask Bitly Assist about your scan performance in plain language, and let Weekly Insights surface what changed and what to do next.
